A soft cloth and a dry spot are really your whole care kit.

In short

A fresh infrared blanket is the difference between using it now and then and looking forward to it every week. It takes very little time.

  • Wipe the inside after every session
  • Leave the blanket open until it is dry
  • Use an inner liner to catch sweat and skin oils
  • Store it loosely, without sharp creases

Cleaning and caring for your infrared blanket sounds like a chore, but it is mostly a matter of small habits. You use the blanket close to your skin, so keeping it fresh is as natural as washing your towel.

Below we calmly go through everything you need: wiping, drying, marks, storage and looking after the cable and controller. None of it gets complicated.

Why care is worth the effort

A blanket that smells fresh and feels supple is one you reach for more often. A blanket that was put away damp is not. On top of that, the inside of a sauna blanket is made from material that can easily handle daily use, as long as you don't leave sweat and skin oils on it day after day. So care is about two things at once: hygiene and lifespan.

The good news is that it hardly takes any time each time. Two minutes after a session is usually enough.

Wipe your infrared blanket after every session

After a session, some sweat stays behind. Gently wipe the inside with a slightly damp, soft cloth. Wring the cloth out well: you want to wipe, not push water into the material. Don't use harsh cleaning products, bleach or abrasives. Mild and simple works best and keeps the finish looking good.

While you're at it, do the edge and the zip as well. That is where dust and flakes of skin collect fastest.

Let the blanket dry properly

This is the step people skip most often, and the one that makes the biggest difference. After wiping, leave the blanket open until it is completely dry. Only then close it or roll it up. If you put it away damp, moisture stays trapped between the layers, and that is exactly where musty smells start.

Ideally, lay the blanket over the arm of a chair or over the sofa in a room you can air for a while. There's no need to put it in full sun or on the radiator; normal room temperature is fine.

Protect the inside with an inner liner

If you want to make cleaning even easier, an inner liner for your sauna blanket helps. It catches sweat and skin oils and is easy to clean separately, so the blanket itself stays clean for much longer. In practice, that shifts the care from the blanket to something you simply put in the wash.

A cotton sheet or a large towel works in the same way, it just slides out of place more easily while you're lying down.

Dealing with marks and spots

If you see a mark, deal with it while it is fresh. Dab it with a damp cloth, with a tiny bit of mild soap if needed, and then go over it again with a cloth with just water. Dab, don't rub. Then let the spot dry completely before you put the blanket away. Never submerge a sauna blanket in water and don't put it in the washing machine, unless the manual explicitly allows it.

Storing it dry does more for the freshness of your blanket than any cleaning product.

Storing without sharp creases

A few things keep your blanket in good condition:

  • Roll or fold it loosely, without sharp creases in the same place
  • Keep it in a dry place, not in a damp basement or shed
  • Keep it away from sharp objects and pet claws
  • Don't put heavy things on top of it in the cupboard

If you always fold along exactly the same line, vary it. That spreads the strain across the material. The full guide with drying times, storage spots and a step by step plan is in storing your infrared blanket.

Good to know

Keep a clean cloth with the blanket in the storage bag. What you have within reach, you actually use.

Cable, plug and controller

The electrical part needs little, but it does need attention. Only wipe the controller with a dry or barely damp cloth and keep moisture away from the connection. Coil the cable loosely instead of wrapping it tightly around the controller, and never pull on the cable to get the plug out. Check now and then that there are no kinks or damage anywhere. If there are, don't use the blanket and get in touch with customer service.

  1. Right after the sessionWipe the inside with a slightly damp, soft cloth.
  2. Leave it openLeave the blanket open until it is completely dry.
  3. Fold looselyFold or roll without sharp creases and store it dry.
  4. A quick look every monthCheck the cable, plug and zip for damage or wear.

A little care, a lot of enjoyment

By making these habits a fixed part of your routine, your sauna blanket stays pleasant to use for longer. It takes little effort and makes every warm moment that bit nicer. If the blanket has started to smell musty anyway, leave it open for a day in a well aired room before you use it again.

Frequently asked questions

Can an infrared sauna blanket go in the washing machine?

No, unless the manual explicitly allows it. A sauna blanket contains electrical parts. Wipe the inside with a slightly damp cloth and then let it dry completely.

How often should I clean the blanket?

Wiping after every session is the easiest rule. If you use an inner liner, the blanket itself needs cleaning less often and you mainly wash the inner liner.

Which cleaning product can I use?

Water is usually enough. For a mark you can use a tiny bit of mild soap and then wipe again with a cloth with just water. Avoid bleach, solvents and abrasives.

My blanket smells musty, what now?

That's almost always because it wasn't completely dry when stored. Lay it open in a well ventilated room until it's completely dry and from now on only store it after that.

What's the best way to store the blanket?

Loosely rolled or folded, without sharp creases, in a dry place and without heavy things on top. Vary where you fold, so the same spot isn't always under strain.
